A course for handover and big emotions

Handover is not just a logistical exchange. It is an emotional transition.

Handovers can be the hardest few minutes of the week, for your child and for you. This course helps you understand what is actually happening, and gives you practical ways to prepare, stay steady in the moment, and meet the aftermath with calm.

10 modules · scenarios, rituals and scripts · personalised toolkit · self-paced

Does this sound familiar?
“I'm not going! You can't make me!”
“The car ride home is completely silent.”
“They fall apart an hour after we get home.”
“I dread every handover.”

These moments are not a sign you are doing it wrong. They are an emotional transition, and there are ways to make them easier.

"Why is my child being difficult?" is the wrong question.

A handover asks a child to separate from one attachment figure, reconnect with another, and shift environment, rhythm and expectations, all within minutes. For children, that is something they feel in the body, not something they think their way through.

The shift here is from "why is my child being difficult?" to "what is happening inside my child right now?" From correction to curiosity, from control to containment.

Handover stress is mostly built in the lead-up, and released afterwards.

The method

The SAFE framework for handover

A repeatable sequence of emotional leadership for handover moments, taught in Module 3 and used throughout the course.

S

Stabilise yourself

Before you respond to your child, you respond to yourself. Your nervous system sets the tone.

A

Allow their experience

When behaviour hits a nerve, resist the urge to stop it or take it personally. Let them feel what they feel.

F

Foster their inner compass

When you feel out of control, the instinct is to take control. SAFE invites you to guide, not control.

E

Establish the safe base

Regulation comes from repeated experience of safety. Consistency does the work.

By the end, you’ll be able to…

Handle high-conflict dynamicsUnderstand why standard advice can backfire, and what protects your child instead.
Have words readyCarry go-to scripts for the moments that catch you off guard.
